Saying 'NO' to social community gatherings.

Following the cancellation of two biggest Pacific events in Auckland, Prime Minister Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern has announced that gatherings of 500 or more people should be cancelled because of concerns regarding the spread of coronavirus.

“Cancelling of events will slow the spread of COVID-19 and help to protect those who are more vulnerable to severe illness”, Adern says. The cancelling of large gatherings is one way to promote the social distancing required to stem the spread of coronavirus.

The new rules are applied to non-essential events such as festivals, fairs, sporting, religious and cultural events.

To minimise the spread of virus, wash and dry your hands thoroughly, cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, and keep at least a metre away from other people coughing and sneezing.

Replace a handshake with a smile, wave or a nod and avoid public gatherings, restrict using public transport and isolate yourself from large crowds. The goal is to avoid a large-scale community spread of the virus.

Our Pacific communities need to rethink attending church, large weddings, family reunions and community events. Gatherings of over 100 people should be reconsidered so mass close contact can be avoided.

Recently Ardern announced that any person from any country, excluding the Pacific Islands, will be required to self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival in New Zealand, and encouraged all New Zealanders to avoid all non-essential travel overseas.

Keeping the coronavirus contained and away from our Pacific communities is a priority. Given the uncertainty regarding the future spread of the virus, look after yourself, your family and your loved ones.
