Drop, cover and hold on!
15 May 2018
SouthSeas Healthcare had an earthquake drill last Friday, which saw staff diving under desks and tables as part of the exercise.
Staff were encouraged to take part in the earthquake drill, to drop cover and hold as part of SouthSeas’ Health and Safety exercises.
SouthSeas Healthcare Health and Safety representatives Doleen Raj and Malaefono Seve said the drill was to remind staff what to do in an event of an earthquake.
“We have a duty of care to our staff to ensure they know what to do in an emergency,” says Doleen.
“At the sound of the whistle at 3pm on Friday, staff took cover under their desks for over a minute.”
“We also notified patients in the waiting room not to panic as it was only an exercise.”
Although it was only an exercise, some patients observed what needed to be done in a real life situation, as being demonstrated by SouthSeas staff in consult room.
“Some patients took the drill seriously and followed the exercise,” says Malaefono.
“It was a successful exercise and staff were checking on each other to make sure everyone was safe after the rehearsed earthquake”.
There will be more drill exercises in SouthSeas to make staff aware of potential threats, and to think about how safe their workplace is.
More than 20 staff took part in the drill and it served as a great reminder to all staff about how vital drills are in ensuring workplace safety preparedness.
The aim was to make everyone aware of the right actions to take before, during, and after an earthquake.
