Finding time for staff wellbeing
09 April 2019
SouthSeas Healthcare recently hosted their very first staff games evening for 2019 at the Otara Pool and Leisure centre.
The idea was for staff and their families to engage in sports followed by a shared meal as part of staff wellbeing.
“This event brings our staff together to exercise a healthy and happy workforce, engaged in a wellbeing programme with their families,” says SouthSeas Healthcare Practice Manager and Social Club Committee Member Tule Tuinauvai.
“It is all about team work and a sense of engagement, whether at work or play.”
High employee engagement is what all employers want.
“Participation and fun was the key focus and it was great to see staff, and their families enjoying a relaxing fun evening with good music and plenty of activities,” says Tule.
“Having a games evening helps many staff members to manage stress, by engaging in physical fitness and quality time for themselves with their families.”
The SouthSeas staff games initiative is co-ordinated as part of social club event designed to encourage the health and wellbeing of employees.
Staff participated in a range of sports including volleyball, basketball and a ‘gym mat relay’ followed by a shared meal at the Te Puke Community Hall.
The benefits of such programmes to SouthSeas are tailored for better engagement, teamwork and fitness.
“We are a health organisation and wellbeing is important to our staff as well as the patients and families we serve,” says Tule.
“Work can get really busy and this is an opportunity to bring staff together and encourage a healthy lifestyle.”
Although SouthSeas have good intentions in participation in wellness activities, those efforts can also mean they are listening to staff want. “If SouthSeas is going to set up a staff games evening, it's important we get the buy in from staff. This was a successful evening.”
SouthSeas are looking forward to organising the next Fun Games Evening with the aim of encouraging all staff to participate.
