Gearing up for the 2019 language weeks
16 May 2019
The 2019 Language Week line-up is approaching fast and SouthSeas Healthcare want to boost awareness of the value of Pacific languages and cultures their staff bring to the workplace. The language weeks also strengthens SouthSeas’ connections with patients and families.
They begin with Samoa Language Week towards the end of this month and end with Tokelau Language Week in October. Although officially termed Language Weeks, all run for at least a month and some extend activities throughout the year.
The 2013 census confirmed that language use has declined across all Pacific language groups. The languages of New Zealand’s realm countries: Niue, Tokelau and the Cook Islands are classified by UNESCO as vulnerable or endangered. Almost 60% of Pacific people are now born in New Zealand and there is concern that the trend will accelerate unless promotion of the languages is strengthened.
SouthSeas celebrates the language weeks by encouraging staff to participate in language activities, sharing of cultural practices and concluding with a shared meal. Strengthening Pacific languages is one of SouthSeas’ objectives to ensure staff value their heritage language and be able to converse with patients and families they interact with.
