Get immunised if you plan to travel
12 December 2019
SouthSeas Healthcare would like to remind Pacific families that it takes two weeks for your immunity to build after you are immunised so it is important to be vaccinated at least two weeks before you travel.
“Given the outbreak of measles in Samoa, Tonga and Fiji, we are urging all our families with children to get all their vaccinations up-to-date,” says SouthSeas Healthcare CEO Lemalu Silao Vaisola-Sefo.
“The Christmas and New Year period sees many relatives and friends travelling to the Islands or families in the islands visiting, so it is important to make sure you are all immunised, especially the children.”

“We’d like to remind families that infants aged six to 11 months travelling to an outbreak area need to have one dose of MMR. Any child vaccinated before 12 months of age will still need two further doses of the MMR vaccine.”
“Getting immunised now will give children protection over Christmas and the school holidays.”
“Measles can be dangerous for children and adults. It is a highly infectious airborne disease that spreads easily through the air via coughing and sneezing. Please get your children vaccinated at 15 months and 4 years old to prevent measles. It’s free.”
Immunisation provides the best possible protection against measles. If you or your child has not had a measles vaccination, please see your doctor.
“Talk to us if you are planning to travel or if you need to see a doctor or a nurse. Vaccination with the MMR vaccine offers the best protection against measles.”
If you have been exposed to measles and start to feel unwell, call Healthline on 0800 611 116 for advice and information in the first instance. Healthline has interpreters; when your call is answered, say you’d like an interpreter and the language you’d like to speak in.
