Goodfellow Symposium 2019
07 April 2019
SouthSeas Healthcare staff were part of the Goodfellow Symposium, held 22- 24 March 2019 at the Vodafone Events Centre in Auckland, with more than 80 speakers and presenters engaging in the primary care symposium tailor-made for GPs, urgent care physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners and registrars.
The symposium is designed to provide engaging and informative sessions, clinical updates and opportunities to participate in practical sessions with the aim of participants returning to their workplaces armed with new knowledge and skills.
The first day kicked-off with pre symposium workshops including advanced care life support, diabetes, musculoskeletal examinations, skin lesion and dermatoscopy, and Focussed Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (FACT).
The remaining days featured short talks, influential panel discussions and the opportunity to participate in hands-on practical sessions.
Presentations included Stella Milsom talking about evidence-based strategies to assist in supporting and managing menopause-associated symptoms in women. Massimo Giola presented an update on Mens STI’s. Maggie Chapman-Ow’s presentation addressed GI symptoms in older adults who may be at risk of colorectal cancer but do not qualify for screening. Rob Shieff’s Question and Answers session focussed on depression, bipolar disorder and states of problematic anxiety, and a presentation from Lily Fraser, Leanne Tekaru and Dougal Thorburn looked at cultural competence - doing better on Monday with Maori patients.
Staff who attended said it was a great platform to share ideas and celebrate the important progress being made in the primary healthcare sector.
