As the number of coronavirus cases across New Zealand continues to grow, everyone from our frontline staff to patients, caregivers, the elderly, and those with a chronic illness have a part to play.

The College of GPs has endorsed a recent move for GPs to consult patients online and over the phone.

South Seas GPs are planning to follow this course of action for consultations to be conducted online or over the phone as part of a plan to limit the number of people visiting the clinic at one time and sitting together in a waiting room as the government warns that people should limit their contact with each other.

Those who need to be physically assessed by a GP will still be able to come to the clinic but we strongly advise that you to talk to us first over the phone. Phone consultations allow GPs to discuss individual concerns, test results and administer regular repeat prescriptions quickly. All this frees up time for other patients.

“We have advised our healthcare workers and all other staff to take extra hygiene precautions and to stay home at the first signs of illness. We are working to find ways to protect our patients and our staff. We know that it's the community that needs to stop the spread and it's important to understand that there is really no such thing as an overreaction,” says Lemalu Silao Vaisola-Sefo, SouthSeas Healthcare CEO.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern recently announced a four-level alert system to manage the risks and response to COVID-19. New Zealand is currently on Level 2 (Response). Under Level 3 of the Covid-19 alert system, primary care consultations would need to be remotely managed (i.e. no direct consultation).

South Seas is preparing to test every cautionary measure to step up before tougher restrictions become mandatory.
