Leaupepe Elisapeta (Peta) Karalus, founder of K’aute Pasifika Trust based in Hamilton and a well-known Pacific leader in Waikato region has recently been honoured by Wintec, receiving  the prestigious Honourary Fellowship Award for her services to the Pasifika community.

Leaupepe accepted the honour at the recent Wintec’s Health and Social Practice graduation at Hamilton’s Claudelands Events Centre, where she spoke about the tough time she had leaving Samoa as a 17 year old trainee nurse to travel to New Zealand to further her education.

Fast track to 1999; Leaupepe established K’aute Pasifika, a Pacific health provider with the help and support of the Pasifika communities in Hamilton. She remained a Chief Executive Officer there for 18 years.

SouthSeas have worked closely with Leaupepe and K’aute Pasifika over the years, and especially with Whānau Ora services, to help struggling Pacific families.

To date, K’aute Pasifika Trust services more than 4,000 Pacific Island clients in Hamilton with a range of health, social and education services.

“I felt greatly overwhelmed when I was told I was receiving this award,” says Leaupepe. “I receive this award with honour on behalf of all the people and communities that were instrumental in making K’aute Pasifika Trust what it is today.”

SouthSeas Board and CEO Silao Vaisola-Sefo congratulate Leaupepe Peta Karalus for her honourary award and her family for their support, especially for her longstanding contribution to Pacific families and communities in the Waikato region.

“We are incredibly proud to hear of Peta’s achievement. She is an outstanding individual who has worked for many years serving our families and communities and has made a significant contribution in Waikato. We are so proud to see her recognised and we congratulate Peta and her family and wish her all the best for the future,” says Silao.

Leaupepe is married to Dr Pauli Noel Karalus, who have nine children, some medical doctors and others with Phd’s in their own fields.

She holds a high chief title, Leaupepe from the village of Fasito’outa and is the current President of the Fonofaufautua a Samoa, Advisory Council of Chiefs, Hamilton. In 2006 she was awarded the Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2006 for services to the Pacific Islands community.

Leaupepe was among three other Waikato leaders in the areas of innovation, business and arts, all receiving honorary awards from Wintec for their longstanding contribution to their respective fields.
