Let’s start the conversation
24 September 2019
This week is Mental Health Awareness Week, which runs from Monday 23rd to Sunday 29th September 2019 and SouthSeas Healthcare is partnering with Vaka Tautua, Penina Health Trust and Pacific Homecare to launch a special campaign ‘How Are you?’ as a conversation starter to help families and communities navigate their way to wellbeing.
There are lots of ways to get conversations about mental health started.
Dr Maryann Heather of SouthSeas Healthcare says mental health manifests itself in different ways and in different forms.
“Mental health issues can stem from various sources ranging from stress generated from jobs, finances, loss of loved-ones, to general depression. Sometimes, providing help is as simple as asking ‘how are you?', and really listening to the answer.”
“Come and talk to us if you need help,” says Dr Heather.
“Don’t be afraid to ask for help. We know it’s an issue we don’t really talk about as a community. Sometimes people are scared to talk about it and others feel they don’t want to be judged. Our simple message is to come and talk to us. If you need help, please come in and see us.”
Mental Health Awareness week is an opportunity for Kiwis to explore the experiences, relationships and surroundings that make them feel good and uplift their wellbeing.
“Discover the things that make you feel good and do more, and remember we are here to listen.”
Mental illness is a condition that affects a person's way of thinking, their feelings, and behaviour and there is no “one size fits all” solution.
“Let’s explore what enhances our wellbeing together. Come and talk to us as a way to get the ball rolling. Having a conversation about getting help can make a big difference,” says Dr Heather.
The theme of Mental Health Awareness Week 2019 is ‘Explore your way to Wellbeing’.
Remember, we are here to listen to you and support you.
