Let’s talk mental health

SouthSeas Healthcare staff joined mental health experts recently to discuss mental health care as part of the Pacific Island Mental Health Professionals Association (PIMHPA) Symposium, held at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Auckland.

Staff who attended found the symposium useful for engaging, connecting and sharing personal experiences and to gain a shared understanding of mental health and the trauma caused to staff, patients and their family members.

SouthSeas CEO Silao Vaisola-Sefo says it is always good to engage and be part of a symposium to hear a Pacific view on mental health views. “It enables us to be part of the talanoa about the real-life challenges facing the Pacific mental health.”

The symposium is also a channel to raise any issues, ask questions about safety and culture and be part of a collaboration to ensure safety for all.

In June, the Health Promotion Agency released and launched a report “Te Kaveinga” about Pacific mental health and wellbeing.

Te Kaveinga presented key findings from the New Zealand Mental Health Monitor and the Health and Lifestyles Survey related to the mental health and wellbeing of Pacific peoples.

The report found overall that Pacific peoples report high levels of personal and family wellbeing, and that they are well connected socially and culturally. The findings also indicated that Pacific adults experience psychological distress at higher levels than non-Pacific adults.

The report also examines diversity in the Pacific population, and presented findings that indicate differences in mental health outcomes for some multi-ethnic Pacific people, and in cultural connectedness for some Pacific subgroups.
