Professor Aiono begins three-year term with NUS

SouthSeas Healthcare Founder Professor Aiono Alec Ekeroma has started in his new role as the Vice Chancellor and President of the National University of Samoa (NUS) for the next three years.

Aiono attained his PhD at the University of Auckland with an MBA from the University of Keele in the United Kingdom, MBBS from the University of PNG, FRCOG (Fellow of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology United Kingdom), RANZCOG (Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists), and DipObs from University of Auckland.

Prior to his new appointment, Aiono was appointed by NUS in 2018 as the founding Professor at the School of Medicine. He played an instrumental part in establishing the medical school at the NUS and also played a lead role in the curriculum committee responsible for developing the school’s initial curriculum in 2014.

Aiono is a well-respected researcher of Pacific health who has extensive teaching experience with medical students.

Previously, he worked at the University of Otago as the Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. He was also the Associate Professor at the University of Auckland and has held many leadership roles in the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, along with Pacific health organisations both within New Zealand and in the Pacific Islands.

Aiono’s commitment to and passion of education is admired and respected by many health professionals in New Zealand and the Pacific. His areas of expertise include the fields of stillbirth, research capacity building, Pacific women’s health, vitamin D, medical curriculum development, gestational diabetes mellitus, and global health.

Aiono, along with eight other Samoan doctors was instrumental in establishing SouthSeas Healthcare twenty years ago. He was also one of the founding members of the Pasifika Medical Association.
