Promoting wellness to Pasifika men

In October, SouthSeas Healthcare hosted a Men’s Wellness Evening as an opportunity to connect with their male patients and raise awareness of health issues faced by Pasifika men with a simple message; “Having a dodgy heart is no joke so get your heart checked, even if you feel OK.”

With heart problems being the biggest killer of Pacific men, SouthSeas Healthcare encourages South Auckland men to have open conversations about topics such as men’s health and wellbeing.

SouthSeas Community Health worker Shaun Tautali says the wellness evening began with a relaxed pre-gathering, welcoming guests with an assortment of healthy snacks and non-alcoholic beverages whilst local musicians Grenville Leavasa [Lanzwel] and Roland Williams entertained with soulful tunes of the past.

“The highlight of the workshop was the fact that there were no clinicians or health experts presenting, rather men who have experienced heart issues, sharing their journey about how it affected them, their families and what steps they have taken to ensure that they are around for many more years.”

Feedback was positive with many saying that a wellness evening is an important platform where men of all ages can come together in a safe and fun environment to not only hear stories, but be inspired by their peers to get regular heart checks and to think about what is really important to them.

One of the attendees said he had lost 7 family members in the last 2 years due to heart failure. “No one should go through what I have been through. I am determined to show my kids, my nephews and nieces, that I can be an example of someone who needs to put my health first so I can be around for them. No excuses!”

Another attendee said he felt the event was amazing because it was safe, humorous, but at the same time, the message from the guest speakers was serious.

Another said if he doesn’t look after his well-being and have regular health checks, he would suffer the consequences and leave loved ones behind, which was the message he took away from the wellness evening.

Others said they were a bit apprehensive about Men's Health events but they were glad they made it, as it was a rewarding experience and they will be spreading the word for the next Men's Wellness event which SouthSeas is planning with a focus on education and steps to being more active and healthier.
