19 November 2018

SouthSeas Healthcare staff joined health professionals from New Zealand and the Pacific Islands attending the two-day Pasifika Medical Association conference in Auckland, held 14-15 November at the Holiday Inn Hotel.

The conference continues to provide the opportunity for Pacific health professionals to collaborate on a range of issues important to improving the health outcomes for Pacific peoples in the New Zealand and Pacific regions.

Staff who attended the conference said that the conference helps to discuss pressing health matters in a forum specifically for Pacific health professionals, medical practitioners, community workers and key stakeholders on New Zealand and Pacific regional issues that influence the health and wellbeing of Pacific families and their communities.

For the last 22 years, the Association has made a positive difference and played a major role in shaping the development of a Pacific health workforce, creating career pathways for Pacific students in science and improving the health and wellbeing of communities in New Zealand and throughout the South Pacific.

In August, the Association hosted a Charity Ball and Auction which raised over $30,000 and launched six scholarships to assist Pacific people into medical and health career pathways.

The conference hosted respected health leaders from the Pacific Islands and provided the opportunity for them to share their experience and insights with participants.

This year’s conference theme was, “Participate, Innovate & Reinvigorate” and included topics such as innovative approaches to Non-Communicable Diseases, impact of climate change, the future of mental health and research, and the Pacific health workforce.
