Travel restrictions to China, be safe

Deadly coronavirus outbreak, stay safe.

SouthSeas Healthcare is urging Pacific families travelling to China and other parts of the world to reconsider trips and stay alert to symptoms of respiratory illness such as fever, coughing and difficulty breathing as they may relate to coronavirus. Difficulty breathing is a sign of possible pneumonia and requires immediate medical attention.

Following the outbreak of coronavirus, travel restrictions now imposed by Chinese authorities and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade now advise that New Zealanders do not travel to Hubei Province.

The Chinese authorities have placed strict travel restrictions in and around Wuhan, Huanggang, Ezhou, Xiantao and Qianjiang, and may impose further travel restrictions elsewhere in China.

Travellers who become sick within a month of their arrival are encouraged to seek medical advice and contact Healthline (for free) 0800 611 116 or a doctor. It is important to mention recent travel to Wuhan and any known contact with someone with severe acute respiratory illness who has been in Wuhan.

WHO advises to follow the basic steps to reduce the general risk of acute respiratory infection. These are:

  • avoid close contact with people suffering acute respiratory infections
  • wash hands frequently, especially after contact with ill people or their environment
  • avoid close contact with sick farm animals or wild animals
  • people with symptoms of acute respiratory infection should practice cough etiquette:
    • maintain distance
    • cover coughs and sneezes with disposable tissues or clothing
    • wash hands

For health information, travellers are recommended to read the information provided on the New Zealand Ministry of Health website. Full travel advice on SafeTravel can also be found here. Further information is available on the websites of WHO and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
