Mana Kidz
Mana Kidz is a free, nurse-led, school based programme that provides comprehensive healthcare for children in the Counties Manukau Health region. The programme is led by the National Hauora Coalition in partnership with Counties Manukau Health and is supported by South Seas.
Who Is Eligible?
Children aged 5-12 years old enrolled in the Mana Kidz programme in primary and intermediate schools in South Auckland. South Seas Healthcare looks after 7 of these schools. A nurse and/or whānau support worker will check for signs of a ‘sore throat’ and/or throat infection to detect the Streptococcus Group A bacteria commonly known as Strep A using a throat swab, skin infection and child health assessments.
Did you know Counties Manukau has the highest number of Acute Rheumatic Fever (ARF) cases in Auckland? ARF is caused by an individual’s abnormal autoimmune response to the Strep A bacteria and unfortunately it commonly affects Māori and Pacific tamariki and rangitahi aged between 3-19 years old. It can be prevented by ensuring Strep A throat infections are treated with a 10 day course of antibiotics.
